The garden of love is green without limit and yields many fruits other than sorrow or joy
Hazrat Inayat Khan

The Annual Spring Retreat follows a unique format that includes teaching sessions, and small group inquiry, along with periods of silence, meditation practice and Zikr. It is all interwoven with music, poetry, sohbet (spiritual conversation), and the spirit of the community.

If you are new to our Annual Spring Retreat and feel an interest in the Sufi path, and readiness for a spiritual intensive, please read the following letter:

Dear Friends, I’m writing to you as you consider registering for the Annual Spring Retreat to be held on Zoom from April 15th-21st, 2024.

The purpose of this letter is to insure that you understand the nature of this retreat and that you are prepared to enter fully into the retreat process.

The retreat is highly experiential. In addition to meditation and traditional spiritual practices, we practice the process of contemplative inquiry – a spoken process done in dyads, triads, and in guided small groups. If you are new to contemplative inquiry, it will be important to become familiar with the practice in order to ensure that you are comfortable participating fully.

For those new to the practice of inquiry or who have other questions, we will hold orientation sessions in advance of the retreat on Zoom. This can also be a time to learn about other practices such as Zikr if these are new to you. You will receive an invitation for these sessions closer to the retreat dates.

An effective spiritual retreat takes us beyond our everyday vantage point, and therefore you may find yourself in new territory. This can be both thrilling and disorienting at times. Completing registration indicates that you understand the nature of spiritual transformation, and this feels right for you at this time.

Warmly,

Gulbadan Vila
Registrar, Annual Spring Retreat

Your interest is appreciated.  Be aware registration is limited, so register soon.  A three-month payment plan was available only until Feb 16.

NOTE: $75 charge for cancellations beginning March 20, 2024.

Taj Inayat & Gayan Macher are the Real (deal). They are truly in contact with the divine source of existence, and they bring forth the love, wisdom, compassion, and understanding which originates in that source. I love the combination of these two amazing beings teaching together as a team.   Khalid

This Retreat is true nurturance for life’s journey.   J.L.B.

The Retreat was Deep and Soul Opening. It is lovely to be together working in states of deep understanding and open hearts!  SS

The Retreat provided a welcome breath of renewal and inspiration that I can still tap into weeks later.  Zehra.

Teacher(s)

Taj Inayat

Taj Inayat

Taj Inayat is the spiritual director of the Hurqalya Center and an initiate since 1967 in the Sufi Order International, now the Inayatiyya Order, a mystical and ecumenical fellowship rooted in the visionary legacy of Hazrat Inayat Khan. Three years after initiation she met Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, head of the Order, and became his spiritual partner. They collaborated in the work until his death in 2004.

Taj served as Vice President of the Sufi Order International, as teacher/guide for many years before co-creating Sufi Retreats and New Rain, programs that carried on the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan.

Taj’s work is founded on a lifetime's attention to the human heart. Her capacity for supporting mystical awakening and self-knowing has grown out of her long experience as a spiritual guide in the transformative traditions of Sufism, Diamond Approach and Tibetan Buddhism. She is a minister in the Universal Worship Church and holds an MA in Counseling Psychology.

Gayan Macher

Gayan Macher

Gayan is a companion and guide to those who are called to the courageous path of love. He has practiced and taught the universal Sufism of Hazrat Inayat Khan his entire adult life. In addition, he has studied Buddhist practice, the Diamond Approach, and psychology, where he explored emerging understandings of the formation of the ego.

Gayan leads group retreats and has guided scores of individual students. He collaborated with Pir Zia Inayat Khan in designing Suluk Academy, and taught at Suluk for eight years. Along with Taj Inayat he created Sufi Retreats, and then New Rain, which became laboratories for the process of awakening and spiritual maturation.

A specialty of his work is leading Inner Guidance Groups, a process in which people learn the art of listening to the voice of truth and understanding coming from within.

Gayan also has a 40-year career as a consultant to executives of organizations, having worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies as well as non-profits of all sizes. Being a confidant to people in positions of significant responsibility has given him a front row seat for the study of leadership and human nature.

Among Gayan’s great loves is music. He plays guitar, and as a singer-song writer has recorded two CDs of original songs.

Khushi Tanveer

Khushi Tanveer

Khushi was drawn “like a moth to the flame” to the Sufi path first through the music of the Sufi Choir, followed by the classic film “Sunseed”. These led her to the Dances of Universal Peace which struck a profound chord of homecoming. She received her initial Sufi training during her time as a founding member of the Abode of the Message, and went on to become an Inayati Order (then Sufi Order) representative, cheraga, guide, and leader of the Dances of Universal Peace for many years.

As can be seen by the strong presence of Pluto in her astrology chart, Khushi has been called to the path of transformation. She serves others through facilitating Inquiry, assisting Taj with her retreats, and as one of the Hurqalya Center teachers and mentors. She has been a member of the Hurqalya Center Board of Directors for over 10 years.

In 2006 Khushi established the Remembrance Site online (sufiremembrance.net) which honors those in the lineage of Hazrat Inayat Khan who have passed into the unseen realms. She also sings with members of the Threshold Choir at the bedsides of those who are transitioning from life to death and the unseen realms.

Professionally Khushi studied transpersonal psychology and was a licensed Marriage and Family therapist for more than 2 decades. She has resided in Sebastopol, CA for 40 years. In addition to her Sufi work, she is a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to two beautiful grandsons who beckon her with regularity to DC.

For first-time Hurqalya Center participants, the following are recommendations on how to ensure a technically sound and optimal retreat experience.

  • Themes: Spiritual Path, Truth, Witnessing,

If life is to have meaning, if guidance is real and we wish to find it, we must be sincere in our readiness to listen. We must want to hear what is in our hearts, and what has grown silent due to lack of attention.
